Under 12’s Ski Sessions Update

Who's feet? A small prize for the first correct response...

The last of the 2011 Under 12 “JDS Plus” sessions ran today. We even had a light covering of snow to increase the fun and glide so pretty much everybody had a good time.

There was a survey for children  and parents to see how often and when  and if the group should run in 2012. The general opinion was that twice a month would be great from August to December. That may require a slight increase in the number of coaches or helpers to so that every body doesn’t have to turn out twice a month, but it’s a very encouraging vote from the participants.

Thanks very much to all the children and parents for turning up over the last few months, it’s been a great time for the coaches!

Clash Snow Report 9th December

From Colin Miller

The storm contributed only another 1-3cm of fresh snow, but the snowpack froze overnight,

promising a good base if it lasts. Typical snow depth stays at 10-12cm. Condition varies from fast “frozen ice cream” surface to excellent powder on crunchy base, e.g. mid-section of Haute Route.

Descent of Leids Leap still not recommended, and there is thin cover in the usual places elsewhere where it’s a case of choosing one’s line carefully or making judicious use of the verge. Snowgoose and the northern part of Timberline have already filled in with 0.5m-deep snowpack, velvet-topped for superb skiing and 20-30 metres in width. The southern part of

Timberline has skiable frozen snow on heather. The storm brought down several trees between the main entrance and the foot of Highland Fling. These can be bypassed with some ingenuity. Other trails may also be affected likewise, and there is a fair amount of twiggy debris. No snow fell during the day. Temperature at car park today was zero.

The A941 from Rhynie is icebound, no doubt as a result of Thursday afternoon’s power shower and subsequent wet snow freezing onto the road. Car park had been ploughed before the storm and is icy.

Pre-Winter Work Party

The pre-winter work party was pre-emted by the arrival of winter today. Volunteers turned up to find most of the rollerski track under a thin coating of snow. Despite the cold conditions the team cleared leaves and pine needles and encroaching undergrowth from the matting and parts of the rollerski tracks. Many thanks to Peter Thorn, Steve Young, Colin Miller, Hilary Musgrave, Ian Cooper for turning out on such a chilly day and Dr Dave for organizing.

You can find some more pictures from the work party on Dave’s Facebook page.

Skiers at HNOC

5 to 7cm of snow have fallen in the Clash but cover is very patchy. Alex and Hugh Standen completed the Haute Route and has claimed the golden boot. Jason Williamson and Colin Miller also successfully made it round the route. BNDS members also took advanage of the snow during a training session at Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre.

Club Gets Grant from Snowsport Scotland

Huntly Nordic Ski Club has received a grant of £3,000 from the Snowsport Scotland to buy some new classic roller ski equipment. This is primarily aimed at improving the range of skills children can acquire dry land training during the winter Junior Development Squad, but members will also be able to practice their classic technique on club  nights using this equipment.

Thanks to Snowsport Scotland for supporting development of cross-country skiing!

Action Girls’ Weekend

There’s another opportunity for girls/young women to do some sport with the Action Girls weekend on 26th/27th November. It’s aimed at the 10 to 16 age group and any fitness ability and will be held at Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre.

Winter Events

Here’s a couple of flyers from the ski centre.

Coming up is the Fast & Female weekend which promises “Dancing, Running, Jumping, Skipping, Bounding, Hopping, Crunching and Gliding” for girls aged 10-16. Sarah Young and Olwen Thorn are running it so I’m sure it will be a blast.

Also the winter programme for the ski centre which includes lots of activities for the Tattie Holidays, it’s probably still not too late to book your children in. It’s worth pointing out the Sunday group under 12 sessions are not included in the leaflet but are still going ahead, read all about those in the post at the top of the blog.
