With others confined to barracks by gales and flooding, your intrepid Chairperson found himself to be the only client for the Club’s 2010 Secret Clash, and at risk of having to endure a whole day of his tour leader rabbiting on about Timberline… [Tour leader’s note: Naturally, said snowfield only came into condition the day after, when thaw/freeze finally worked its magic]. Nonetheless, the forest welcomed the bold explorers with shelter from the gale and even a gradual change from driving sleet to light snow. Continue reading
If you’ve ever wondered where all those nice pisted bits come from in the forest. Here’s the answer. In this case it was Rick Newman, putting in some hard work. Photos by Dave Horsley
There was so much snow this year that the Clash Dash was cancelled and some informal sprints were held at the ski centre instead.
Conditions were bitterly cold (for the UK) at -14C, fortunately there were blue skies and no wind. The freezing Deveron made an attractive backdrop to the races.
Results below.
Tomorrow’s Clash Dash has been moved to Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre because snow conditions at the Clash are not suitable for racing. Some informat classic races will be held, any helpers welcome.
Club member Olwen Thorn has qualified for World Cup Biathlon (on December 18th in Obertiliach).
Unfortunately she has picked up a nasty chest infection since Christmas which has prevented her from entering any World Cup Races yet..
New club member Malcolm Cooper claimed the Haute Route Challenge golden boot on the morning of Friday 18th December.
Well done!
BNDS BAGPACK VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED – SATURDAY 5TH DECEMBER
The annual BNDS bagpack is upon us once more at ASDA, Huntly between 10-4pm on Saturday 5th December.
Please let me know how many of your family members will be free to help by 29/11/09 so that I can plan who will do which slots. We normally do 2 hour shifts; i.e. 10-12, 12-2 and 2-4 manning up to 4 tills. I would like as many athletes as possible to take part to make the Squad visible to the local community who have always been very supportive of this national squad. In total I will need 4 athletes and 1 adult per 2 hour slot. Please wear the team GB jackets or the blue hoody or t-shirt (if you have one) on the day and I will hand out name badges.
The club has been contacted by Vitalise looking for helpers on an upcoming ski holiday for blind skiers…

We are delighted to be able to inform the club that at the AGM of Snowsport Scotland Peter Thorn was recognised as Snowsport Scotland Ski Person of the Year for his contribution to Huntly Nordic Ski Club and SnowSport Scotland Nordic Committee.
The citation delivered by Jane Harvey included:
“It is 11 years since the founding of Huntly Nordic Ski Club. Peter Thorn has been the secretary of the club since its inception. However the term “secretary” does not do justice to the many things Pete does for the club: secretary; event organiser; race organiser; race director; fiercely competitive veteran racer; equipment provider and maintainer; coach; tour leader; track setter in Clashindarroch forest; newsletter editor. He liaises with Forest Enterprise to maintain access to the forest trails and interfaces with local planners on other threats such as the proposed wind farm.”………. Continue reading
